This page discusses serums containing Vitamin C and other antioxidants.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the website Harvard Health,<\/strong><\/a> “Topical vitamin C is a science-backed, dermatologist-favorite ingredient that may help slow early skin aging, prevent sun damage, and improve the appearance of wrinkles, dark spots, and acne. Vitamin C is an antioxidant, meaning it fights harmful free radicals (toxins) that come in contact with your skin from external sources like air pollution, or from inside the body as a result of normal processes like your metabolism. Free radicals can damage the skin, and applying topical vitamin C can combat free radicals and may improve the skin\u2019s overall appearance.”<\/span><\/p>\n

While Vitamin C skincare products are very popular, there seems to be quite a bit of disagreement even among experts in terms of which criteria should be used to identify the best products.<\/span><\/p>\n

For instance, products may contain different types of Vitamin C, and this may lead to variations in factors such as the most effective concentration of product, how important it is to protect the product carefully from light and air, and the appropriateness of including particular other ingredients in the formulas.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, because Vitamin C can be irritating,<\/strong><\/a> the optimal strength of the active ingredients may vary substantially across users based on their particular skincare goals as well as their sensitivity levels.<\/span><\/p>\n

Especially since I have been focused much less on skin brightening than on other skin issues, I have yet to have reached any conclusions on which of the many Vitamin C serums on the market are likely to be best for those who want to see major results from using them.<\/span><\/p>\n

I do feel that the use of Vitamin C seems to have been a little helpful to my skin, but it mostly has been in the context of using milder formulations since those seem to be less irritating.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My skin seems to have responded particularly well to a few moisturizing creams that include some Vitamin C, and so I have listed those on this page along with the serums.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I also frequently use only a small amount of Vitamin C serum, mixed with a good bit of moisturizing cream before application, to increase the likelihood that my skin will not be irritated by it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since I am far from an expert in terms of assessing the efficacy of Vitamin C serums, the discussion on this page is focused mostly on the presence in Vitamin C skincare products of various other problematic ingredients that people may want to avoid.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While I will share my own personal experiences with Vitamin C products, these may not be applicable to everyone since many people likely may benefit from much higher strengths than seem to be optimal for me.<\/span><\/p>\n

The two forms of Vitamin C appear to be bis-glyceryl ascorbate and tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, which are different than the forms used in many of the other products mentioned on this page.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ingredients list for this product mentions several kinds of citrus essential oils as well as a number of botanical extracts (including limonene and linalool, which EWG considers to be potentially problematic).<\/span><\/p>\n

However, EWG states that the amounts of these substances in the formula are small enough that the organization does not consider them to be a concern, and thus has given the product “EWG Verified” status.<\/span><\/p>\n

I obtained a small sample bottle of this product and thought that it was very slightly irritating to my skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether this was due just to the product being strong or to the fragrance ingredients, I don’t know.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The product also smelled rather citrus-y, but that part was not bothersome to me.<\/span><\/p>\n

In general, I feel that although the product is using different forms of Vitamin C than I have seen in other similar products, it still seems to me to be quite expensive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I would need to be more convinced that this product was unusually good to pay that much money for it, I think.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Because I have come to think that Vitamin C serums that are too strong can be slightly irritating to my skin, I am rather appreciative of the fact that this product contains an apparently lower level of Vitamin C along with some good hydrators (including niacinamide, squalane, sodium hyaluronate, and sodium acetylated hyaluronate).<\/span><\/p>\n

The only ingredient that EWG lists as being potentially problematic is malic acid, which is included as an exfoliator.<\/span><\/p>\n

I like this product and feel that my skin has done well with it just as a general moisturizing cream.<\/span><\/p>\n

Especially since it provides the small Vitamin C benefits, I would consider buying it again.<\/span><\/p>\n

I wrote to Honest and asked about the percentage of Vitamin C in this formula. The response that I got back from Honest Client Services was, “Thank you for reaching out. Due to our unique proprietary formula, we cannot share our percent of Vitamin C for the serum.”<\/span><\/p>\n

In the ingredients list, sodium ascorbyl phosphate (the only Vitamin C) is listed as the 24th ingredient. It therefore would seem that its percentage in the formula is less than 5%.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s hard to estimate how strong the product compared to competitive products, though, since different types of Vitamin C differ in their strength.<\/span><\/p>\n

For instance, while the No B.S. product contains 20% Vitamin C, only part of that is sodium ascorbyl phosphate.<\/span><\/p>\n

In any case,\u00a0I’ve used up most of a container of the Honest product and think that it feels about the same in terms of the level of irritation as the other Vitamin C products that I have tried.<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s hard for me to know how much of an effect it has had on my skin quality since I have been using other products, however.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the ingredients list mentions several non-active ingredients such as preservatives that have the potential to be problematic (and that I think have bothered my skin when used in certain other products), EWG states that the levels are low enough that they do not consider them to be a concern.<\/span><\/p>\n

Like a number of other Honest products, this serum contains hydrolyzed sodium hyaluronate. This type of sodium hyaluronate consists of very small molecules that have the potential to be especially effective at hydrating the skin but that some people also say have more chance of being irritating.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have not found my own skin to be irritated at all by other Honest products that contain it, though.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another possibly problematic ingredient is carrageenan, which is a seaweed derivative that sometimes can be contaminated with pollutants.<\/span><\/p>\n

The opaque plastic pump for this serum seems designed to protect the product from both light and air. Although sodium ascorbyl phosphate is supposedly less affected by oxidation than some other types of Vitamin C, this still seems that it could be a good thing.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, I see on the Amazon site that there are a number of complaints about the pump for the product not working very well. I have not had any problems with this myself, but I bought the product directly from Honest rather than from Amazon.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another issue with this type of pump is that it is impossible to tell how much product is left in the container until it totally runs out.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have done quite well with this rich cream, which contains several different forms of Vitamin C as well as a number of different botanicals.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of all the Vitamin C products that I have tried so far, this one seems to have been the best for me. The fact that it is part of a cream rather than in more concentrated form in a serum seems like it might be good for my delicate skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s also quite moisturizing and my skin feels good when I use it.<\/span><\/p>\n

The cream has a pretty strong fruity\/flowery type smell – apparently in part from the jasmine oil – that made me worry that I might react to it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I really like the smell of this cream and my skin seems to have done just fine with it, though.<\/span><\/p>\n

The product comes with a little wooden spoon, apparently for hygiene reasons. I found the spoon a little hard to keep clean and have been using my Jones Road Spatula<\/strong><\/a> instead.<\/span><\/p>\n

The fact that the first ingredient (other than water) is safflower oil makes me wonder how long it would take before the product goes rancid.<\/span><\/p>\n

Maybe all the Vitamin C in the product will keep that from occurring, though.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, a more stable form of vitamin C than the commonly used L-Ascorbic Acid found in most skin care products, provides the same benefits, without the risk of oxidation and irritation that is often associated with L-Ascorbic Acid. Our Vitamin C Serum utilizes sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP), a form of vitamin C that is much more stable and less prone to oxidation than some traditionally used forms of vitamin C. This product comes in an amber glass bottle with a dropper. Mad Hippie’s argument seems to be that because they are using sodium ascorbyl phosphate – a more stable form of vitamin C – there is less need to worry about oxidation of the product.<\/span><\/p>\n

This product is on the thicker side and has not seemed to irritate my skin at all.<\/span><\/p>\n

I rather like the mild smell of it and have enjoyed using it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Both EWG and Think Dirty rate this product as excellent in terms of the ingredients included.<\/span><\/p>\n

I may buy this product again if I do not find another Vitamin C serum that I like better.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Living Clean in a Dirty World shopping website is designed to provide guidance to those seeking out products that are relatively low in toxicity and that provide generally positive user experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the skincare and makeup sections have a particular focus on products appropriate for women who are in their 40’s or beyond, the information provided may be useful for other people as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

The products are curated by Lisa Petrison,<\/strong><\/a> who has been focused on helping people to improve their health by avoiding toxicity since 2008 and who heads the Paradigm Change organization.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her\u00a0Living Clean in a Dirty World blog site<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0discusses a variety of topics of relevance to those who are working to pursue a more natural lifestyle with less exposure to harmful toxicity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lisa is the author of several books, including\u00a0A Beginner’s Guide to Mold Avoidance<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(co-written with Erik Johnson).<\/span><\/p>\n

She also runs the Paradigm Change website<\/strong><\/a> (focusing on issues related to toxic mold illness) and the Mold Avoiders Facebook group<\/strong><\/a> (designed for the discussion of all topics of interest to those pursuing the mold avoidance approach described in the “Beginner’s Guide” book).<\/span><\/p>\n

Lisa was born in August 1964 and has yet to try cosmetic surgery, Botox or other cosmetic treatments requiring interactions with a physician, or beauty products containing retinoids.<\/span><\/p>\n

In her former life, Lisa worked as a business school professor, as a marketing consultant to a variety of large companies, and as a reporter covering the advertising industry.<\/span><\/p>\n

She holds a Ph.D. in marketing and social psychology from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University as well as B.S.\/M.S. degrees from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern.<\/span><\/p>\n
