The serums discussed on this page claim to soften wrinkles, strengthen the skin barrier, or supply healthful substances (such as collagen, ceramides or peptides) that may be in short supply in maturing skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

While some of these serums include “phyto-retinols” (herbs such as bakuchiol that have been shown in studies<\/strong><\/a> to be helpful with skin issues such as wrinkles), products containing actual retinoids are discussed on the Retinol Serums<\/strong><\/a> page of this website.<\/span><\/p>\n

I had never used any anti-aging serums at all before starting this project and do feel that introducing them has been generally helpful to my skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

While serums tend to be expensive, I have come to the conclusion that spending more money on facial serums and oils, and somewhat less money on other skincare products, may be a good strategy for me in terms of maximizing the benefits that my skin receives.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because I suspect that my own skin has responded particularly well to serums that contain probiotics, I have noted the specific fermented ingredients that each of these serums contains toward the top of the listings. <\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, skincare in general is very individualistic and the benefits of serums in particular may be cumulative over time.<\/span><\/p>\n

This page is designed to provide a starting point for people in terms of deciding on which ones to try by discussing the ingredients as well as my own short-term experiences with the products.<\/span><\/p>\n

The product contains a variety of botanicals (some of them wildcrafted in the area near Jackson Hole, Wyoming) as well as several moisturizers (including sunflower seed oil, niacinamide, squalane, sodium hyaluronate, and jojoba seed oil).<\/span><\/p>\n

The product also contains lactic acid as an exfoliator.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have enjoyed using this serum and feel that it has been good for my skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

I’ve finished off most of a bottle of it and may buy it again.<\/span><\/p>\n

The product contains a wide variety of botanical extracts, along with substantial amounts of aloe vera, squalane and carrageenan.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although this seems to be a popular product and although I like some of Annmarie’s other offerings, I have not been feeling that great about using it on my skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

While it is possible that I am a little allergic to one or more of the botanicals that are used, I also wonder about the carrageenan (a particular type of red seaweed). Although this is still allowed in organic foods, many people believe that it actually can be an especially inflammatory substance (possibly due to periodic toxic contamination of the seaweed).<\/span><\/p>\n

In any case, although I am very enthusiastic about some of Annmarie’s face oils, I don’t much like this product and don’t see myself buying it again.<\/span><\/p>\n

This product contains a wide variety of botanical-based processed fragrances. PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil, phenoxyethanol and sodium benzoate also are included.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although “Fragrance” is listed in the ingredients, Aveda states that none of their products include any synthetic fragrances.<\/span><\/p>\n

Still, I don’t quite understand why Aveda would use so many scented ingredients in a product that is specifically designed for sensitive skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

I don’t think that this serum was very good for my delicate facial skin and so have been using it on my neck and chest instead.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I don’t see myself buying it again.<\/span><\/p>\n

Safflower oleosomes help restore skin’s protective lipid barrier to maintain moisture and strengthen skin’s natural defense against environmental stress. Dermatologist-tested. Non-acnegenic. For all skin types.”<\/span><\/p>\n

This product contains several potentially problematic chemicals, including benzyl salicylate, benzyl benzoate, sodium benzoate, and PEG-8.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, the product includes quite a few ingredients that seem to have the main purpose of adding fragrance to the product. Although Aveda states that they do not use any synthetics in their products, I don’t feel like it is a good idea for skincare products to include scented ingredients unless they have a functional purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although I was able to wear this product on my face without it experiencing actual irritation (such as redness or itching), I do not think that my facial skin did very well with it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I ended up using the whole bottle on my neck and chest. Although this was not the only product I used in this area, I think it might have been helpful since I think that my neck seemed to start looking substantially better during this time.<\/span><\/p>\n

While I doubt that I would buy it again for this purpose, I do think that the whole Aveda Tulasara line has some effective ingredients in it.<\/span><\/p>\n

I wish there were a version of it available for sensitive skin since I think I might be really loyal to it if there were.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ingredients list for this product includes a number of ingredients that I consider to be non-optimal in skincare, including a few different kinds of botanically based scents, sodium benzoate, and dimethicone (a silicone).<\/span><\/p>\n

The preservatives polysorbate-20 (which to my understanding is not allowed in products sold by Credo) and phenoxyethanol also are included.<\/span><\/p>\n

I also feel a little suspicious of the trehalose<\/strong> <\/a>since that has been associated with the rise of the superbug C. difficile<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

While I feel a little put off by the fairly strong scent of this serum, my skin seems to do fine with the product and I have used quite a bit of it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Recently, though, I have moved more toward using the Beautycounter Countertime serum (which also includes bakuchiol) instead of this one since it has a cleaner ingredients list and since my skin seems to like it a bit better.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is one of my favorite beauty products of everything that I have tried so far. I use a little squirt of it on my face at least once a day and believe that it has made a noticeable difference in terms of helping my skin to become less reactive and healthier looking.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the website copy does not bring this up, I see that the product includes “Saccharomyces Ferment Lysate Filtrate,” which is a fermentation of a friendly yeast. I wonder if that (rather than the herbs) may be the primary reason that my skin does well with this product and if maybe it should be listed on the Microbial Support<\/strong><\/a> page rather than this one.<\/span><\/p>\n

In any case, it would have been hard for me to do a project involving trying on a lot of beauty products with dubious ingredients if I hadn’t been using this serum to support my skin barrier, I think.<\/span><\/p>\n

There is a bit of irony here, though, since the Skinlongevity product itself includes a number of ingredients that EWG considers to be problematic and that I would rather not put on my skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although I feel like this product is not as gentle as it could or likely should be, I don’t feel that it ever has irritated my skin in any significant way that makes me not want to use it.<\/span><\/p>\n

The ingredients that seem potentially problematic include stearamidopropyl dimethylamine (a lipid-based conditioning agent that I have rarely seen listed for other products) and polysorbate-20 (a surfactant that Credo does not allow in products that it sells). Trehalose<\/strong> <\/a>is also listed.<\/span><\/p>\n

It also includes several potentially problematic preservatives, including sodium metabisulfite, sodium lactate, sodium benzoate, and phenoxyethanol.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the product lists “fragrance” on the ingredients list, Bare Minerals says that it uses no synthetic fragrance in its products. A few additional botanically derived scents (including limonene and geraniol) also are included. <\/span><\/p>\n

Although I would rather not have any scents in my skincare products, these are not necessarily deal-breakers for me.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The scent of the product itself is a moderately light citrus-herbal smell that I do not personally find to be objectionable.<\/span><\/p>\n

I’ve gone through several bottles of this product so far and feel pretty sure that I will continue buying it in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n

This product is unusual in that it does not contain any ingredients that EWG considers to be problematic.<\/span><\/p>\n

I think that using it has been good for my skin and that it has not caused any irritation at all.<\/span><\/p>\n

While I feel that my skin has improved substantially over the past year in terms of how youthful it looks, I don’t know how much of that improvement to attribute to this product since I have been trying out many different things.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, I have worked my way through a whole bottle of this product and believe that it is one of the few items that I will end up repurchasing since it does seem to be good for my skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cocokind products have worked well for me in general, and this product is no exception.<\/span><\/p>\n

I worked my way through a full bottle of this product and feel that it has had a positive effect on my skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

While the price is very affordable, it seems to perform at least as well as many of the more expensive serums that I have tried.<\/span><\/p>\n

The product does include ceteareth-20, which is not allowed in products sold at Credo. Credo states with regard to ceteareth-20 and other products containing ethoxolated ingredients, “These ingredients are synthetically produced using Ethylene Oxide, a carcinogen. 1,4-Dioxane, another carcinogen, often contaminates the Ethoxylated ingredients, but 1,4-Dioxane itself doesn\u2019t appear on ingredient labels. To avoid Ethoxylated compounds look for these common ingredients listed on labels.”<\/span><\/p>\n

While the possibility of 1,4-Dioxane being present does concern me, I don’t know how frequently this kind of contamination occurs. It’s therefore hard to weigh the risk of it against the benefits of the product.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since I had a good experience with the product and since the price is affordable, I very well may buy another bottle at some point.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although this product is stated as being a moisturizer, it actually seems to provide very little moisture to my skin.The ingredients list does not seem to suggest that the product provides much in the way of the usual hydrators (such as hyluronic acid or squalane) or natural oils, either.<\/span><\/p>\n

The idea that this product does not work very well as a moisturizer is a frequent complaint in online user reviews as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have found that I like this product better if I think of it more like a serum, with the goal of providing some nourishing ingredients to my skin prior to applying a real moisturizing cream on the top.<\/span><\/p>\n

Regardless of how I think of this product, though, I’m not sure that it has been that great for my skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although I don’t think that it has been noticeably irritating, I have had to really force myself to use it frequently enough to finish off my mini jar of it.<\/span><\/p>\n

The product contains polysorbate-20 and polysorbate-60, which are emulsifiers that Credo does not allow in products that it sells, due to their containing ethoxylated ingredients. (See the discussion of the Cocokind product listed above for more details.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Several preservatives also are included.<\/span><\/p>\n

While I would not likely buy this product again, some other very sensitive people seem to do well with Drunk Elephant products in general and so may also like this serum-like cream.<\/span><\/p>\n

I would suggest trying to get a mini jar before investing in a full-size one.<\/span><\/p>\n

I received a small bottle of this product in the Kristina Holey + Marie Veronique Starter Kit<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(designed for sensitive skin) from Marie Veronique and so was able to give it a somewhat extended try.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I have really liked the way that it feels on my skin and do not feel that it has caused any irritation.<\/span><\/p>\n

The serum certainly is a very expensive product, but I am feeling good enough about it that I am tempted to buy a full-size bottle to see how much of a difference it makes.<\/span><\/p>\n

In general, so far I like this line enough that I am thinking that if money were no object, the best thing for my skin might very well be to just use these products and not bother with any others.<\/span><\/p>\n

I do feel that my skin barrier (which had been destroyed as a result of my briefly trying the Vintner’s Daughter products) improved quite a lot as a result of using these Marie Veronique products.<\/span><\/p>\n

Maybe if I keep experimenting, I can find other products that I like equally well since these\u00a0 products are way too expensive for most people to even consider using as part of their daily routine.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have used almost an entire bottle of this serum and feel that it has been really good for my skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although I was wary of some of the ingredients since EWG considers them to be potentially problematic, I have not had any problems at all in terms of this product (or the other products from The Outset) irritating my skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

I also like the fact that the product is unscented and comes in a simple glass bottle with a pump.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although this is not a low-priced serum, I think that it is a good value for the quality of the product provided and believe that I will purchase it again in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n

More than other serums that I have tried, this one leaves a rather thick and tacky surface on the skin. Some of this is likely due to the hyaluronic acid in the product, but perhaps the chebula adds to the effect.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have a full bottle of this serum but have only used it on my face a couple of times since (like the True Botanicals facial oil that I also tried) it feels slightly irritating to my delicate facial skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

I see that the product includes small amounts of what Drunk Elephant would call “drying alcohols” (part of that company’s “Suspicious Six”) and so perhaps those two ingredients (phenyl alcohol and alcohol) are causing mild issues for me.<\/span><\/p>\n

It also could be that my skin does not do especially well with one or more of the other botanicals in the product. <\/span><\/p>\n

Although I do not see any essential oils listed per se, the floral smell of the product (apparently from the “neroli flower distillate”) is quite strong.<\/span><\/p>\n

Recently I have been using the product on my hands before bedtime and feel that it has had an almost immediate positive effect in terms of making the skin on them look plumper and younger.<\/span><\/p>\n

My hands seem to tolerate this product fine, without experiencing any irritation from it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While having nice-looking hands is important to me, I don’t know that I would rebuy this product to use for this purpose after I finish off this bottle. Maybe I can find another product that works just as well but is not quite so expensive.<\/span><\/p>\n

I do think that this serum may be effective with regard to supporting the skin barrier for skin is not too sensitive to tolerate it, though.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chanel No. 1 de Chanel Revitalizing Serum ($120):<\/strong><\/a> I tried a small sample of this new product (released in early 2022) and found that it was mildly irritating to my skin. In general, I think that it is unfortunate that although the product is stated as containing 97% natural ingredients, Chanel felt it necessary to put unspecified “fragrance” in it. Chanel responded to my query by stating that both synthetic and natural fragrance ingredients were used in it. Since the eye cream from this line (which I liked and was able to tolerate) does not include fragrance, I wonder if the serum also might have become a favorite of mine if Chanel had managed to restrain themselves in terms of allowing the product to be unscented. <\/span>EWG gives the product a 5 (yellow), flagging as possibly problematic the fragrance (8), chlorphenesin (3), and lactic acid (4).<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the skincare and makeup sections have a particular focus on products appropriate for women who are in their 40’s or beyond, the information provided may be useful for other people as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

The products are curated by Lisa Petrison,<\/strong><\/a> who has been focused on helping people to improve their health by avoiding toxicity since 2008 and who heads the Paradigm Change organization.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her\u00a0Living Clean in a Dirty World blog site<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0discusses a variety of topics of relevance to those who are working to pursue a more natural lifestyle with less exposure to harmful toxicity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lisa is the author of several books, including\u00a0A Beginner’s Guide to Mold Avoidance<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(co-written with Erik Johnson).<\/span><\/p>\n
