Although silicone is a synthetic ingredient, it is not one that tends to be irritating to the skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rather, the main problem with silicone in foundation seems to be that it can create a very effective (and in some cases waterproof) shield on the face that can trap oil, dirt, sweat, dead skin cells, bacteria, fungi and other debris – with the resulting muck causing irritation to the skin and making breakouts more likely.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Silicones – perhaps especially cyclic silicones such as cyclopentasiloxane – also are said to be bad for the environment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite these downsides, it’s my experience that silicone-based foundations often look especially nice on skin that has wrinkles or other textural issues and that they can be very easy to apply.<\/span><\/p>\n

While wearing this kind of foundation regularly probably is not optimal for anyone’s skin quality, I think more occasional use may not be all that damaging to the skin and certainly may be helpful in achieving a pretty look with minimal effort.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wearing the product for a limited amount of time and then removing it thoroughly (which can be easier said than done with some of these waterproof formulas) does seem important though.<\/span><\/p>\n

While most silicone-based foundation formulas also include other problematic ingredients, some look pretty clean to me.<\/span><\/p>\n

I still don’t wear them very often, but a few have worked well for me on those occasions when I do wear them.<\/span><\/p>\n

The description for this product on the Aveda website reads, “Infused with 100% mineral derived pigments and nourishing plant emollients, our Inner Light Mineral Tinted Moisture instantly increases radiance, delivers moisture upon application and provides a smooth, even complexion for flawless radiance.”<\/span><\/p>\n

This product used to have sunscreen in it, but\u00a0a few years ago the company removed the SPF without changing the product name and many people wrote negative reviews of the product on the company website as a result.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have tried both versions and think that the one without the sunscreen is a little better in terms of wearability and appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, it still seems to make me look worse as a result of emphasizing my wrinkles and also provides little coverage of problem areas.<\/span><\/p>\n

The product is listed as containing some natural fragrance as well as PEG-100 stearate.<\/span><\/p>\n

I don’t feel like it has much of a smell and also do not feel that it has irritated my skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

The description of this product on the Beautycounter website reads, “Breathable, buildable coverage with hyaluronic acid to visibly plump the skin. Personally, I really like the way that my skin looks in this foundation. The finish is natural-looking but also refined, and the wrinkles on my face do not seem to look worse than when I am not wearing any foundation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Quite a bit of coverage can be obtained with this foundation by putting thin layers onto the skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the product seems to contain a goodly amount of silicone, I agree with the product description that it is at least a little breathable.<\/span><\/p>\n

I don’t feel that it has irritated my skin at all and actually does seem like it might be a little good for my skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of the silicone-based products that I have tried so far, this is one of the ones that I like the most.<\/span><\/p>\n

I might buy it again if I felt that I needed more coverage than I do now.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have Shade 240 (“light with warm, neutral undertones”) and feel that it has been a good match for my skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although this expensive foundation contains some ingredients that made me concerned that it would not be a good match for my skin, I have done fine with it in terms of lack of irritation.<\/span><\/p>\n

I think that it looks very pretty on my face without emphasizing my wrinkles, with a natural finish that is only slightly dewy-looking.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the coverage level is listed as medium\/full, I feel like I have been able to get a lighter coverage just by spreading the product around with my fingers.<\/span><\/p>\n

It does seem to be pretty buildable for those who want more coverage, though.<\/span><\/p>\n

The product contains several different kinds of silicone and thus is not something that I personally would want to use on a regular basis.<\/span><\/p>\n

I do think that it looks very pretty on me and that it is a nice product to wear on occasion though.<\/span><\/p>\n

The product does contain several ingredients that are on Credo’s “dirty list,” including cyclopentasiloxane, PEG-400 and talc.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The preservatives phenoxyethanol and chlorphenesin also are used.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I hope that these preservatives at least will help the product to last for a long time, since it was expensive and I have only been using it occasionally.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I have the shade Camomile (“light with golden undertones”) in this product and feel that it has been okay for me.<\/span><\/p>\n

The product contains several different forms of silicone, with the only other ingredient listed as being of obvious concern being rose essential oil.<\/span><\/p>\n

I received a sample of this and so gave it a try.<\/span><\/p>\n

While the product went on thin and smoothly, with an attractive and natural-looking soft matte finish, I felt that the formula emphasized the texture of my skin (including my wrinkles) quite a lot.<\/span><\/p>\n

The website uses photos of younger models with good skin, with the comment for each one of “Beautiful Before. Beautiful After.” And I would guess that that indeed, for those particular people, this foundation might help to enhance their attractiveness by adding a soft finish.<\/span><\/p>\n

Based on my experience with it, this foundation seems less suited for those who are older or who have textural issues to their skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

The product also irritated my face to a noticeable extent, with itching occurring for a couple of hours until I took it off. Whether the irritation was just due to the rose oil or to something else, I’m not sure.<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps at some point I will try the foundation again over\u00a0 primer, to see if that helps my skin to tolerate the product better.<\/span><\/p>\n

I’m not that motivated to spend money to do that since this foundation does not look very good on me, though.<\/span><\/p>\n

The product is not listed as Clean at Sephora, apparently because of the use of talc in it.<\/span><\/p>\n

I obtained a small sample of this product and so tried it out on half of my face. While I don’t feel that I have had enough experience with the product to give it a rating, I felt that it was okay on my skin and that it looked nice without drawing much attention to texture issues.<\/span><\/p>\n

I would like to experiment with it more to see how I do with it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the Glossier brand seems to be targeted almost solely toward people under age 40, by far the most popular review of this foundation was written by an older woman extolling the virtues of it for her own skin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She writes: ” I\u2019m 70 and yes I know, out of Glossier\u2019s regular demographic. I have tried so many foundations and have never been able to find a good match and a good texture. As you get older especially you do not want that heavy look. It just emphasizes the lines and wrinkles. At the same this it is nice to have something that evens you out and protects your skin….I used the pictures, found someone with a similar complexion to mine and just went for it. I was amazed to find the match was perfect. After application it seemed ok, walked away for a few minutes then looked again, my skin just looked good. This is far and away the best I\u2019ve ever used and very reasonably priced.”<\/span><\/p>\n

I agree with the reviewer that this foundation looks better on my skin than many of the other products that I have tried.<\/span><\/p>\n

It goes on smoothly and easily, creating a natural-looking blurring effect that does not seem to emphasize my wrinkles or other textural issues.<\/span><\/p>\n

I don’t feel that the product has irritated my skin at all.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the coverage level is light, I do think that my skin looks a little better when I am wearing it.<\/span><\/p>\n

The finish is primarily matte, but with a soft sheen that looks basically just like lightly moisturized skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although it contains several different kinds of silicone, it seems fairly breathable and does not feel uncomfortable on my skin even when it is hot outside.<\/span><\/p>\n

The use of the cyclic silicones cyclopentasiloxane and cyclohexasiloxane would prevent the product from being sold by Credo, and it also contains chlorphenesin as a preservative.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have G9 (“a warm medium shade”). It is a little darker than my skin but has seemed to work well for me, especially during the summer months.<\/span><\/p>\n

It contains a variety of silicones, though none of these are the cyclic silicones that Credo believes to be especially concerning.<\/span><\/p>\n

I tried the product out on a visit to Sephora store.<\/span><\/p>\n

Based on that one experience, I really like this product.<\/span><\/p>\n

It provided some coverage while still looking like I was not wearing any foundation at all.<\/span><\/p>\n

My skin seemed to like this foundation quite a lot and did not display any signs of being irritated by it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the use of all the silicone in it, I feel that this foundation felt good on my skin even when I was sweating a bit as a result of exercise.<\/span><\/p>\n

I didn’t feel that I had any problems removing it as I have with some products.<\/span><\/p>\n

One important thing to know about this foundation is that they are using a similar shade system to MAC, where pink shades are classified as “warm” and yellow shades are classified as “cool.”<\/span><\/p>\n

I tried out a number of shades in the Sephora store and concluded that the best one for me was Shade 110 Light Neutral (“very light with balanced undertones”). This was a bit of a surprise since I feel that my skin usually leans a bit yellow.<\/span><\/p>\n

My experience suggests that it may be highly preferable to visit a Sephora store to try out the foundation in order to choose the right shade.<\/span><\/p>\n

Based on my one experience with this foundation, I think that it may be my favorite among all the ones containing silicone that I have tried.<\/span><\/p>\n

I would like to get a full bottle of it to try it out some more under different conditions to see if it turns out to be as good as I think it is.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although this product contains some dimethicone (silicone), it is listed as the eighth ingredient. This product thus does not seem to be nearly as silicone-heavy as many of the others listed on this page.<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps because of this, I found this product to emphasize my wrinkles somewhat more than the Beautycounter Skin Twin, which seems to be otherwise quite similar.<\/span><\/p>\n

The other obvious comparison products that I have tried are the Nars Light Reflecting Foundation and the Exa High Fidelity Foundation. These products do not contain any silicones and are listed on the Liquid Foundations page.<\/span><\/p>\n

I think that this Ilia product looks better on my skin than either of those do, though perhaps it is just the small amount of silicone that makes the difference.<\/span><\/p>\n

In any case, other than its tendency to make my wrinkles look somewhat worse, the Ilia True Skin foundation seems to be a nice product, providing a substantial amount of coverage, a moderate level of hydration, and a pretty finish.<\/span><\/p>\n

If I wanted more coverage on a regular basis, this might be a good choice.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is available in 30 shades. I have Malokai SF2.5 (“light with warm undertones”) and think that it is a pretty good match for my summer skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

This foundation is described on the MAC website as “an ultra-light, waterproof foundation that provides a sheer buildable veil of coverage with a natural, radiant glow.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Because it does not contain sunscreen, I decided to give it a try even though EWG lists a number of ingredients that I feared might be problematic for me.<\/span><\/p>\n

The MAC counter makeup artist applied the foundation over MAC primer on one side of my face and straight onto my skin on the other side.<\/span><\/p>\n

I thought that the makeup performed really well on both sides of my face, without causing any noticeable irritation at all.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, I thought the product was really pretty on my skin. It did not seem to emphasize my wrinkles or make me look older, and I don’t think that it was obvious to others that I was wearing any foundation at all.<\/span><\/p>\n

By the end of the day, the foundation seemed to be going strong. In fact, it adhered so well to my skin that I had to make a special effort to use a few different kinds of makeup removers (in addition to my usual cleansing cream and warm water) before I felt that it was removed from my skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Personally, I’m not really looking for makeup to adhere to my skin quite so tightly, and so I doubt I would wear this product too often if I bought it.<\/span><\/p>\n

I do think that the makeup looks very nice on me and holds up very well, though.<\/span><\/p>\n

Problematic ingredients in this product include talc (not stated as being tested for asbestos), triethanolamine (a surfactant associated with immunotoxicity), phenoxyethanol and chlorphenesin (preservatives), polysorbate-20 (a surfactant that is on Credo’s “dirty list”), farnesol (a processed fragrance usually derived from the acacia tree), and orange oil.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The makeup artist chose the shade N-0 (the lightest neutral shade) for me and then suggested C-1 (the second-lightest warm shade) as an option. I thought that both of these looked okay on my skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although this product contains some dimethicone (silicone), it is listed as the eleventh ingredient. Some preservatives (phenoxyethanol and polysorbate-20) that some people can find irritating also are included.<\/span><\/p>\n

I did not find that this product irritated my skin at all.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, I did feel that it made my wrinkles look quite a lot worse and that it was very obvious that I was wearing makeup when I had this foundation on.<\/span><\/p>\n

The product is also pretty shiny looking, to the point that I would probably want to take that down with some powder if I were going to wear it out.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is an older formula, and I think that some of the fuller-coverage, cleaner foundations that have been released during the past couple of years provide a much more natural look.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the product contains some floral ingredients, I am not noticing any particular floral scent associated with it.<\/span><\/p>\n

The product is available in 30 shades. I tried the color Warm 2 – Buff and thought that it was a pretty good match.<\/span><\/p>\n

This product is part of the Tarte Sea line.<\/span><\/p>\n

It contains several different kinds of silicone, in addition to some skincare ingredients.<\/span><\/p>\n

The product does contain some talc. However, it is also listed as Clean at Sephora, which has a criterion of “Restricted use: Only talc with no detection of asbestos according to the raw material specification can be used.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The waterproof claim makes it seem similar to the Mac Studio Radiance foundation, and it does perform in a similar way.<\/span><\/p>\n

I feel like both these products look great on my skin, providing some non-irritating mild coverage without exaggerating my wrinkles or other textural issues.<\/span><\/p>\n

A downside of the products is that they are rather difficult to remove.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, I would not want to wear these foundations on a regular basis since I think that locking my skin under all that product without letting it breathe is very bad for it.<\/span><\/p>\n

I might consider it for occasional use if I had more skin issues that I was trying to address, though.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have the shade 12N (“fair neutral”) in this foundation in a mini version<\/strong><\/a> that I purchased for $15. I feel the shade has been okay for me.<\/span><\/p>\n

I am happy that Tarte offers a way for people to give this foundation a real try at a reasonable price and wish other companies would do this as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

Armani Luminous Silk Foundation ($69):<\/strong><\/a> I received a sample of this popular and expensive foundation and so gave it a try. I thought that it looked nice on my face (though not any nicer than many of the other foundations that I have tried) but did find that it has caused irritation in the form of itching. I also found the synthetic fragrance used in the product to be unpleasant. EWG gives this foundation an 8 (red), flagging as problematic the cyclopentasiloxane (3), cetyl PEG\/PPG-10\/1 dimethicone (3), phenoxyethanol (4), PEG-10 dimethicone (3), limonene (5), benzyl salicylate (5), benzyl alcohol (6), linalool (3), isobutane (6), fragrance (8), methylparaben (4), hexyl cinnamal (3), and titanium dioxide (3).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Living Clean in a Dirty World shopping website is designed to provide guidance to those seeking out products that are relatively low in toxicity and that provide generally positive user experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the skincare and makeup sections have a particular focus on products appropriate for women who are in their 40’s or beyond, the information provided may be useful for other people as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

The products are curated by Lisa Petrison,<\/strong><\/a> who has been focused on helping people to improve their health by avoiding toxicity since 2008 and who heads the Paradigm Change organization.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her\u00a0Living Clean in a Dirty World blog site<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0discusses a variety of topics of relevance to those who are working to pursue a more natural lifestyle with less exposure to harmful toxicity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lisa is the author of several books, including\u00a0A Beginner’s Guide to Mold Avoidance<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(co-written with Erik Johnson).<\/span><\/p>\n

She also runs the Paradigm Change website<\/strong><\/a> (focusing on issues related to toxic mold illness) and the Mold Avoiders Facebook group<\/strong><\/a> (designed for the discussion of all topics of interest to those pursuing the mold avoidance approach described in the “Beginner’s Guide” book).<\/span><\/p>\n
