While lip pencils often are perceived to be among the most optional of makeup items, it seems that many mature women may benefit quite a bit from using them.<\/span><\/p>\n

As skin begins to age, it loses some of its elasticity and the natural definition between the lips and the skin surrounding the mouth may begin to break down. This can allow lipsticks to feather and smear into the surrounding skin and also can create a general look of aging.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lip pencils tend to be dry or textured enough to give back some of the original definition to the lips and can provide a good surface that may prevent feathering with creamier lipsticks.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some women also use lip pencils just beyond the edges of their lips to create an appearance of more fullness, but I have never even tried that.<\/span><\/p>\n

I do find that my lips look a lot better and that whatever lipstick I am wearing lasts considerably longer when I take a few seconds to put on some lip pencil, though.<\/span><\/p>\n

I usually use lip pencil over my entire lips rather than just around the edges, to provide a good base for whatever other lip products I am using.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although most brands of lip pencils come in a variety of colors, I usually just wear a neutral color (similar to the natural color of my lips) regardless of what color lipstick or lip gloss I am planning to wear.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, some women who often wear certain shades of bright lipsticks may find that choosing a similar pencil shade can help them to maintain their lip color better even when most of their lipstick has worn off.<\/span><\/p>\n

These pencils are available in some very pretty neutral colors that feel pretty clean to me, and I have purchased a few of them over the years.<\/span><\/p>\n

The problem with these pencils is that, in my experience, the product inside the pencil does not hold up very well and eventually easily breaks off every time I try to sharpen the pencil.<\/span><\/p>\n

Once the lip pencils break down and cannot be sharpened effectively, the only thing to do with them is just to throw them away.<\/span><\/p>\n

I thus don’t think I will buy these again, even though I have enjoyed them briefly before they start breaking on me.<\/span><\/p>\n

I am a fan of Clinique’s Quickliner eye pencils and the one Quickliner lip pencil that I own also seems to work pretty well.<\/span><\/p>\n

It contains silicone (cyclopentasiloxane), which doesn’t seem to be that problematic in terms of human health issues but which conceivably (especially in larger quantities) could have a negative effect on the environment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Silicone in lip pencils is used to allow the product to go on more smoothly and evenly, without the need for ingredients such as oils that might detract from how long the product lasts.<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s my guess that the amount of silicone in this lip pencil is pretty negligible compared to other makeup products such as face primers and thus a relatively low concern with regard to environmental issues.<\/span><\/p>\n

The other problem ingredients in these lip pencils consist of a variety of food colorings, most of which likely are not present in the neutral shades that I prefer in a lip pencil.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have not noticed any taste or odor in this lip liner and it seems to work well for me.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have been using the Soft Rose shade and it has been fine, but if I buy this again I probably would choose the less pink Baby Buff shade.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jane Iredale makes a wide variety of neutral shades of lip liners, all of which contain only natural colors and which are free of toxic ingredients.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have the Spice shade and think that it serves as a nice base for any other lip products that I may be using.<\/span><\/p>\n

It also feels pretty clean to me.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, I feel like the Aveda Lip Primer (which contains moisturizers) and the Clinique Quickliner (which contains silicone) go on more easily for me, especially in terms of allowing me to fill in my entire lips with the product.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Jane Iredale product feels rather dry and requires a little more effort to put on, in comparison.<\/span><\/p>\n

This lip pencil feels a little less dry to me than some of its competitors but still seems to provide a nice base for lipstick.<\/span><\/p>\n

It also feels quite clean to me, without any noticeable smell or taste.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have the Graceful color, which is a neutral dusty pink.<\/span><\/p>\n

While none of this company’s lip pencils contain artificial colors, all of them except for Graceful use Carmine (which is a coloring agent derived from beetles).<\/span><\/p>\n

The founder and head of RMS Beauty is a makeup artist with chemical sensitivities, and everything that I have tried from them has felt really clean to me.<\/span><\/p>\n

This includes the company’s lip pencils, with the only problematic ingredient being a red dye used in the Dressed Up Red (bright red) shade.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although I was afraid that the Nighttime Nude color would be too dark for me, it has worked fine and has felt good to me.<\/span><\/p>\n

(The Daytime Nude version has been out of stock for quite a while and may have been permanently discontinued.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Unlike other mechanical lip pencils that I have tried, this one does not contain any silicone.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have found it somewhat dry to apply (though not quite as much so as the Jane Iredale pencil).<\/span><\/p>\n

Although I doubt that I will buy this pencil again myself, I think that it could be worth considering for those who are looking for an especially clean neutral liner or possibly for a generally good liner in a bright red color.<\/span><\/p>\n

Note that items that have been purchased through the RMS Beauty website and then used may not be returned under any circumstances. Those who are not certain that they will like or be able to tolerate the products may want to consider buying instead through another RMS retailer (such as Credo or Sephora) that will take back gently used products if they do not work out.<\/span><\/p>\n

Information from the Environmental Working Group (EWG) Skin Deep website<\/strong><\/a> is listed here to allow individuals to easily identify products containing ingredients that they may prefer to avoid.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the overall EWG ratings also may provide some helpful guidance, in most cases these were generated by the automated “Build Your Own Report” function on the site rather than through a studied evaluation by EWG personnel. I therefore do not suggest that they be assumed to provide definitive information with regard to the comprative toxicity of products discussed here.<\/span><\/p>\n

The “Living Clean Ratings” take into consideration both toxicity and functionality issues, based on all objective information at my disposal as well as my own subjective experiences with the products. Price is not used as a factor in the determination of these ratings.<\/span><\/p>\n

The “Lisa’s Choice” designation is given to products that I likely would replace fairly soon if I were to lose my entire cosmetics collection and does take the price into consideration as a relevant factor.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Living Clean in a Dirty World shopping website is designed to provide guidance to those seeking out products that are relatively low in toxicity and that provide generally positive user experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the skincare and makeup sections have a particular focus on products appropriate for women who are in their 50’s or beyond, the information provided may be useful for other people as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

The products are curated by Lisa Petrison,<\/strong><\/a> who has been focused on helping people to improve their health by avoiding toxicity since 2008 and who heads the Paradigm Change organization.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her\u00a0Living Clean in a Dirty World blog site<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0discusses a variety of topics of relevance to those who are working to pursue a more natural lifestyle with less exposure to harmful toxicity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lisa is the author of several books, including\u00a0A Beginner’s Guide to Mold Avoidance<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(co-written with Erik Johnson).<\/span><\/p>\n
