The eye creams listed on this page are stated as having the ability to help to hydrate the eye area, soften wrinkles, address dark circles, or prepare the skin for makeup application.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unlike eye creams containing caffeine (which are discussed on a separate page<\/strong><\/a> of this website), most of these are not designed to address bags or puffiness, however.<\/span><\/p>\n

I feel that my own eye area has been a particular problem for me in terms of all of these issues and that I am willing to spend a goodly amount money on eye creams if I really believe they are being helpful.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, without a controlled trial lasting for an extended period of time, it is hard to know whether eye creams are accomplishing what they claim to be able to do.<\/span><\/p>\n

While a few of the creams discussed on this page seem to have been especially good at helping to soften the appearance of the wrinkles around my eyes, most of them more seem to be providing light hydration to my eye area without doing much else.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On the plus side, I feel that most of the eye creams that I have tried have pretty clean ingredients lists and have been good for my skin without causing any irritation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, while some people take the position that eye creams are a “scam” and that regular face creams are fine for use in the eye area, I more have been going the other way and experimenting with using a few of the more reasonably priced eye creams on my face as a whole.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While eye creams tend to be fairly light, mixing them with high-quality unscented face oils results in a richer cream that seems more appropriate for my own very dry facial skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Note that a few of the eye creams mentioned on this page contain trehalose,<\/strong><\/a> which is a natural disaccharide that supposedly has some health benefits but that also has been reported to be associated with the spread of the antibiotic-resistant bacteria Clostridium difficile.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

I am not sure at this point whether the inclusion of trehalose in products should be considered to be a good thing or a bad thing, and so have just noted when products include it in the \u201cEWG Problem Ingredients\u201d sections.<\/span><\/p>\n

I’m somewhat inclined to try to avoid that ingredient myself at this point, but perhaps I eventually will change my mind on it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Bare Minerals website states, “This anti-aging eye cream is clinically shown to dramatically reduce the appearance of fine lines, crow’s feet, puffiness and discoloration in just 1 week. The gentle yet potent formula also stars Protein Peptides and Hyaluronic Acid, which work together to improve texture and smoothness for fresher, more youthful-looking skin.”<\/span><\/p>\n

This eye cream is part of Bare Minerals’ Ageless line, which uses herbs that supposedly reduce the appearance of wrinkles on the face.<\/span><\/p>\n

This eye cream contains a number of chemicals that EWG considers mildly problematic, including myristyl myristate and polysorbate-20 (texture enhancers), sodium lactate (a hydrator and exfoliator), sodium benzoate and phenoxyethanol (preservatives), and dimethicone (silicone).<\/span><\/p>\n

It also contains trehalose.<\/span><\/p>\n

I obtained a small tube of this and tried the product maybe a dozen times. I did not feel that it irritated my eyes or caused any other problems.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is a light cream that felt somewhat moisturizing, but otherwise I am not sure whether it was helpful.<\/span><\/p>\n

I don’t think I would buy this product again because I don’t really feel comfortable with the ingredients list and don’t feel that it did anything especially noteworthy for me.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although I am a big fan of the Bare Minerals Skinlongevity serum, I’m less sure that the Skinlongevity eye cream has been especially helpful to me.<\/span><\/p>\n

Like the Skinlongevity serum, it is supposed to contain “Japanese long-life herb” that strengthens the skin barrier.<\/span><\/p>\n

The product includes the potentially problematic ingredients of several preservatives (sodium metabisulfate, soidium benzoate and phenoxyethanol), as well as lye (potassium hydroxide), silicone (dimethicone) and trehalose.<\/span><\/p>\n

I obtained a couple of large samples of this product and so have been able to give it a good try.<\/span><\/p>\n

This eye cream seemed indistinguishable from the Bare Minerals Ageless eye cream to me.<\/span><\/p>\n

I felt like both of these light eye creams provided some nice hydration to my eye area without causing any irritation.<\/span><\/p>\n

I always am surprised to go back and see all the potentially problematic ingredients in these products since they both felt quite clean to me.<\/span><\/p>\n

I doubt I will buy this eye cream again since I don’t feel entirely comfotable with the ingredients list and don’t feel that it made a noticeable difference for me compared to competitive products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I have found on a few separate occasions when I have noticed my eyes looking especially problematic in terms of wrinkles that using this cream on them for even several days seems to make a significant difference for them.<\/span><\/p>\n

The cream is rich and hydrating, without any ingredients that I consider to be problematic. <\/span><\/p>\n

I do not feel that it has been irritating to my eyes at all.<\/span><\/p>\n

While I would not want to use this as my only eye cream because it does not contain any caffeine, the benefits of the product seem strong enough that it probably would be worthwhile for me to use it once a day on a permanent basis.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Beekman 1802 website states about this product, “A blend of silk tree extract, goat milk, and powerful botanical extracts quickly absorbs into skin for age-defying revitalization that illuminates eyes while helping to fight the appearance of puffiness and dark circles. Instantly cools and awakens dull skin. Fights dark circles and depuffs. Lifts & smooths the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The product is stated as containing Persian silk tree bark extract, which supposedly “tightens skin and fights dark circles and puffiness, lifting the lids.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Goat milk and probiotic extracts also are included, with the implication that the product may improve the microbiome of the skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sodium hyaluronate provides non-oily hydration.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although I don’t feel that I’ve had especially great experiences with other Beekman 1802 products that I have tried, this eye cream seems like it might have potential for those who would like to find a non-greasy eye cream that will not interfere with putting on makeup for daytime use.<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether this product actually would be helpful for my undereye problems if I used it on a regular basis, I’m not sure. But at least it did not irritate my eyes and (in combination with my nighttime eye creams) provided adequate hydration to my eye area during the time that I was using it.<\/span><\/p>\n

The eye gel does contain sodium benzoate, which is a preservative that may bother some people.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other than that, the ingredients list looks pretty clean to me.<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, such a small amount of the product (“pea-sized”) is suggested that even the small trial-size container lasted me for quite a while.<\/span><\/p>\n

I don’t see myself buying it again because I would prefer a product that is more moisturizing.<\/span><\/p>\n

The description of this product reads, “A refreshing gel-cream that moisturizes the delicate eye area for a brighter appearance. Anti-dark circles. Anti-puffiness. Smooths. Tested on all skin types, including sensitive.”<\/span><\/p>\n

This product is the only one in the No. 1 de Chanel line that does not include any unspecified (and apparently synthetic) fragrance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I tried it out in an Ulta store and when it did not seem to be bothersome to me, bought a full jar.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I used it on a daily basis for several weeks, ceasing the use of all other eye creams for a good part of that time, and since then have been using it periodically.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the plus side, I have found that this cream seems to be more effective at softening the wrinkles around my eyes than most of the other eye creams that I have tried.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While I am not saying that I am sure that it does not have any anti-puffiness benefits, I don’t think it works as well as eye creams containing caffeine for my eye bags and so would not want this to be my only eye cream on a long-term basis.<\/span><\/p>\n

I also am not sure how well it does with dark circles. I did not notice that it helped mine, but they are pretty stubborn and have never been entirely eliminated despite my having tried many different products designed to address them.<\/span><\/p>\n

This eye cream does contain a few components that seem to have the potential of irritating the eyes, including chlorphenesin and sodium benzoate (preservatives) and lactic acid (usually used as an exfoliant).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I feel that my eyes have done okay with this product if I restrict the usage to just the skin under my eyes and next to my eyes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I do feel that the cream has been a little irritating to my eyes when I have put it on my eyelids, though.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All in all, I feel that this cream has some strong benefits in terms of softening my crow’s feet wrinkles and have enjoyed using it for that reason.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Probably after I finish this jar of product, I will stick with the Beautycounter Countertime eye cream to continue working on those wrinkles since that product is cleaner and seems to be just as effective.<\/span><\/p>\n

I wouldn’t rule out buying the Chanel cream again though.<\/span><\/p>\n

I feel that this is a quite gentle and generally very nice eye cream that provides some pleasant hydration to my eye area.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It feels very clean to me, which is consistent with the lack of obviously problematic ingredients stated as being included in it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While I am hesitant to use most eye creams on my eyelids due to potential irritation issues, this one seems to have been okay for me with regard to that.<\/p>\n

The reasonable price opens up the possibility of using it as an overall face cream, and I think that it has worked very well for that.<\/p>\n

I haven’t felt that it does much at all in terms of addressing dark circles, puffiness, sagging or dullness, however.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It really just seems to be moisturizing my eye area without irritating it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I think that especially for the price, this is an excellent basic product that I would likely use every day if my eye area were not such a problem for me.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is a hydrating eye moisturizer in stick form with a very clean ingredients list.<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s quite thick and somewhat sticky, which makes me think that it is really only appropriate as a night moisturizer.<\/span><\/p>\n

The raw carrot smell from the carrot essential oil is pretty strong.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although this product seems to get good reviews on the Evanhealy website, I’m not convinced that it has been very helpful to my eye area, and I also have found both the stickiness and the carrot smell to be unappealing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Also, even though I don’t really smell the helichrysum oil in this product, I am not sure that it is a good idea to use any kind of essential oils in the eye area.<\/span><\/p>\n

The main oils used in the formula (sunflower seed oil, coconut oil, castor oil and olive oil) are not my first choice in skincare products, either.<\/span><\/p>\n

I guess it therefore should not have been a surprise that despite the generally pretty clean ingredients list this product didn’t seem to work very well for me.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although this eye cream does not seem to have offered me any special relief of wrinkles or dark circles or bags, it has nonetheless been one of the better products that I have tried in terms of offering general hydration and moisturizing benefits to my eye area.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have found that if I give it a minute or two after application, the ingredients turn into the sort of tacky surface that works very well with my eye makeup and undereye concealer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, despite the inclusion of a few questionable ingredients, it has not seemed to irritate my eyes or my skin at all.<\/span><\/p>\n

This product works well as a cream for my entire face, though perhaps not any better than the much less expensive Honest Hydrogel<\/strong><\/a> cream (which also has a clean ingredients list).<\/span><\/p>\n

Although this product from Honest claims to be helpful with regard to puffiness issues, I think that the products that I have tried that contain caffeine have been much more helpful for me with regard to that issue than this product has.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether the use of Vitamin C (tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate) in the product has been helpful with regard to brightening, I don’t know.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I do think that this product has provided some nice hydration to my eye area without causing irritation, however.<\/span><\/p>\n

It actually seems to me very similar to the Honest Deep Hydration Eye Cream in terms of the my subjective experience with it. I’d have to use both in a comparison test for a long time to know for sure.<\/span><\/p>\n

This product seems to be positioned as a companion for the Honest Everyday Radiance + C Moisturizer, which I also really like. <\/span><\/p>\n

That product (which I have frequently used as a day cream) also has a pretty clean ingredient list, but seems to be a little richer and has a much lower per-gram cost.<\/span><\/p>\n

This eye cream from Jones Road seems primarily designed to be hydrating without being greasy, and therefore may be pretty easily worn under makeup.<\/span><\/p>\n

Only a small amount is needed to moisturize my eye area enough to be comfortable and to serve as a good base for the Jones Road face pencils that I use under my eyes every day.<\/span><\/p>\n

I haven’t had any problems with this eye cream and it has felt pretty good to me when I have used it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I am somewhat concerned with the use of trehalose, to the point that this probably would prevent me from\u00a0 buying the product again, though.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is an interesting eye cream because it includes a fermentation product (Saccharomyces\/camellia sinensis leaf\/cladosiphon okamuranus\/rice ferment filtrate) as the first ingredient.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I feel that my own facial skin tends to do especially well with products that contain fermentation ingredients, and this eye cream has seemed to be fine for me as long as I just use it underneath and beside my eyes rather than on my eyelids.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the other hand, the use of natural fragrance is unusual and (in my opinion) undesirable in an eye cream.<\/span><\/p>\n

The scent is so slight that I wouldn’t have even realized that the product included a fragrance if I hadn’t read the ingredients list, and so perhaps the amount is very small.<\/span><\/p>\n

The other somewhat unusual thing about this product is that it is a little greasy, with an almost-solid texture that is more like a balm than a cream.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the copy states that this is a good product to put on prior to applying makeup, I’ve not found it to work that well for that purpose and so have used it primarily at night.<\/span><\/p>\n

I just obtained a small jar of this product in a Tatcha starter set and so haven’t experimented with the product over an extended period of time to see if it seemed to provide any long-term benefits beyond just moisturizing my eye area.<\/span><\/p>\n

I’d be more inclined to buy a full-size jar if it didn’t have the fragrance in it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Like all the products from The Outset, I feel like this one has worked really well for me despite containing some ingredients that EWG considers to be somewhat problematic.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have noticed in the past that my skin almost always responds well to products that contain Saccharomyces ferment and suspect that its use here is part of the reason that my skin seems to do well with this cream.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I think that this has been a nice moisturizing cream for my eye area and that my skin responds well to it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether it has any special properties with regard to helping wrinkles, I don’t know.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is an economical moisturizing eye gel from W3LL People that is supposed to address fine lines as well as to moisturize the eye area.<\/span><\/p>\n

It contains several different hydrators, including niacinamide and snow mushroom.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is a quite light eye cream that does not seem to have caused any irritation to my eye area but that also does not seem to have been that moisturizing to it.<\/span><\/p>\n

While the product is free of ingredients that EWG considers to be problematic, it does contain trehalose.<\/span><\/p>\n

For whatever reason, I have not felt very inclined to use this product very often and do not see myself buying it again.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Living Clean in a Dirty World shopping website is designed to provide guidance to those seeking out products that are relatively low in toxicity and that provide generally positive user experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the skincare and makeup sections have a particular focus on products appropriate for women who are in their 40’s or beyond, the information provided may be useful for other people as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

The products are curated by Lisa Petrison,<\/strong><\/a> who has been focused on helping people to improve their health by avoiding toxicity since 2008 and who heads the Paradigm Change organization.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her\u00a0Living Clean in a Dirty World blog site<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0discusses a variety of topics of relevance to those who are working to pursue a more natural lifestyle with less exposure to harmful toxicity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lisa is the author of several books, including\u00a0A Beginner’s Guide to Mold Avoidance<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(co-written with Erik Johnson).<\/span><\/p>\n

She also runs the Paradigm Change website<\/strong><\/a> (focusing on issues related to toxic mold illness) and the Mold Avoiders Facebook group<\/strong><\/a> (designed for the discussion of all topics of interest to those pursuing the mold avoidance approach described in the “Beginner’s Guide” book).<\/span><\/p>\n

Lisa was born in August 1964 and has yet to try cosmetic surgery, Botox or other cosmetic treatments requiring interactions with a physician, or beauty products containing retinoids.<\/span><\/p>\n

In her former life, Lisa worked as a business school professor, as a marketing consultant to a variety of large companies, and as a reporter covering the advertising industry.<\/span><\/p>\n

She holds a Ph.D. in marketing and social psychology from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University as well as B.S.\/M.S. degrees from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lisa would like to extend a special note of appreciation to Ellen Kleiman-Redden for her help in trying out products and discussing issues related to this project.<\/span><\/p>\n

Products that I have tried or researched and that I have not found to be acceptable from a toxicity standpoint have been omitted entirely from the discussions on this website.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, since a goal of this project is to introduce people to a range of options in terms of price and functionality, some products discussed on this site include ingredients that may not be appropriate for everyone.<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s my hope that all individuals making their way to this site will find at least a few options from each product category that meet all of their own needs and wants from a variety of perspectives.<\/span><\/p>\n
