Just over the last couple of years, tinted balms designed to provide color to the cheeks as well as the lips have emerged as a new beauty category.<\/span><\/p>\n

These products usually have a clear base, which means that even if they are brightly colored, they can provide a fresh and dewy look to the skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Most of them do not totally dry down on the skin and instead retain a sticky feeling that some people may find unappealing, however.<\/span><\/p>\n

The description of this product reads, “A multi-use lip and cheek balm enriched with Red Camellia Oil. The nourishing, buttery formula melts into skin while adding a touch of colour. Lips appear vibrant and plump. At the heart of the collection is the Red Camellia flower, whose revitalizing powers and extraordinary energy give it perennial youth. Red Camellia Oil delivers softness and helps maintain skin\u2019s barrier function.”<\/span><\/p>\n

No 1 de Chanel (which was introduced in January 2022) is Chanel’s first attempt to enter the cleaner beauty space. The initial launch included several skincare products, a foundation, and this lip\/cheek product.<\/span><\/p>\n

Oddly, thus far the line has been sold in the U.S. only in Ulta stores and on the Chanel website.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first thing to know about this line is that Chanel seems to have been unable to resist the temptation to include synthetic fragrance in all the products in the line except the eye cream – a move that I think likely has driven away many people who might otherwise have been interested in it.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have the color Vital Beige (a natural rosy color) in the Lip & Cheek Balm. <\/span><\/p>\n

I think that it is quite pretty on me me and that it looks somewhat different than all of the other blush products that I own. <\/span><\/p>\n

It also seems to hold up on my skin without disappearing better than many other products.<\/span><\/p>\n

I feel like the fragrance in this product has been light and has not kept me from using small amounts of this product on my cheeks. Other people may be more bothered by it, though.<\/span><\/p>\n

Possibly due to the inclusion of the fragrance, I do not feel good about the taste of this product and so would not use it on my lips despite the fact that it does look pretty on them.<\/span><\/p>\n

The product has a distinctly sticky texture similar to that of lip gloss, and this has caused many people to complain that it is not suited for use on the cheeks at all.<\/span><\/p>\n

Personally, I have found that the product is so highly saturated with color that I need to use relatively little on my cheeks to get a pretty effect and that therefore the stickiness issue has not been too much of a problem. <\/span><\/p>\n

People who use more of the product may notice the stickiness more, though.<\/span><\/p>\n

All in all, I think this is an interesting product but would not purchase it again.<\/span><\/p>\n

I might like it much more if Chanel removed the fragrance from it though.<\/span><\/p>\n

The description of this product reads, “A hydrating lip balm packed with antioxidants and natural emollients to nourish dry, chafed skin\u2014in original or other fun flavors. Leaves lips looking smooth and hydrated, not shiny.”<\/span><\/p>\n

These balms seem to be promoted primarily for use on the lips, but some versions have potential for being used on the cheeks as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because it contains petrolatum, some people use it for slugging<\/strong> <\/a>during the winter months to seal in moisture.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some of the versions – including Lavender, Rose, Cherry, Mango and Berry – are tinted with color and may add a slight flush to the cheeks or lips.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unspecified “flavor\/aroma” is listed as an ingredient in the product, and I fear that this may be synthetic in some versions (especially the Birthday version).<\/span><\/p>\n

The additional processed fragrance (citronellol, geraniol and linalool) also may be problematic for some people.<\/span><\/p>\n

This product also includes petrolatum and BHT, which some people find problematic.<\/span><\/p>\n

I tried the Rose version in this balm and thought that it was okay for me.<\/span><\/p>\n

The product is lightly tinted pink and has a mild scent that I am guessing may be derived from only botanical rather than synthetic ingredients.<\/span><\/p>\n

The description of this product reads, “It\u2019s all in the name. Miracle Balm is the secret of no-makeup makeup: a wash of soft-focus moisture to perfect and enhance skin. A light-reflecting superproduct that\u2019s as versatile as it is simple to use. Wear Miracle Balm alone or layer on top of foundation for an instant refresh.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The development of these tinted balms was the original impetus for the founding of Jones Road, and it does seem to be true that there are not any other products on the market that exactly compare to them. <\/span><\/p>\n

The product is a soft balm that is easy to scoop up with the fingers and apply to the skin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Most of the shades are lightly tinted with color and contain just enough shimmer to create a healthy and natural-looking glow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There also is a natural shade (with just a bit of tint) and a few shades with brighter color or more obvious glitter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Like the Jones Road What The Foundation, the Miracle Balms have been rather polarizing in terms of how people respond to them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Because this is a balm, it does not dry down and maintains a tacky feeling on the skin<\/span><\/p>\n

The fact that most of the shades are not very brightly tinted means that a good bit of the product may be needed in order to get much color, thus intensifying the stickiness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While I have seen many people state that this is their favorite makeup product of everything on the marketplace, many others do not like it at all. <\/span><\/p>\n

Those with long hair that falls onto their face often complain especially vehemently about this product, saying that their hair has a tendency to get stuck in it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In general, it seems to me that this product may not be that appropriate for many younger women (especially those with oilier skin) but may be especially useful for women with aging skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

Company owner Bobbi Brown states in a video, “My favorite product for mature skin is hands down the Miracle Balm. Because the Miracle Balm is a skincare moisturizer with beautiful oils in it meets makeup. So it’s got a tint for the skin, it has luminosity. You could use it as blush. You could use it to make yourself look like you’ve been in the sun. You can use it on your lips, on your eyelids, on your neck. You could even use it in your hair. And it is moisturizing, it adds luminosity. So it just really makes you look pretty and it’s easy. And days where you don’t have a lot of makeup, this does the trick.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Personally, I like the appearance of this product on my face as long as I only use a little bit of it, since it gives me a youthful dewy look and also blurs my wrinkles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, unfortunately I have given up on using this product since it invariably makes my face start to itch a little while after I put it on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I am guessing that the reason for this is the inclusion in the product of substantial amounts of essential oils, which apparently are used as preservatives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This product contains rose geranium oil (which always irritates my skin even in very small quantities) and ginger root oil (which has a distinctive smell that I don’t much like). <\/span><\/p>\n

Three additional essential oils – grapefruit, orange and rosemary – used in the product also have some potential to be irritating.<\/span><\/p>\n

I have reacted the same way to the Jones Road foundation and shimmer oil (both of which also include large amounts of essential oils), but I have nonetheless been able to get some use out of those products by using them over a good primer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I feel that the main benefit of the Miracle Balm is that it is something to be thrown on casually in lieu of makeup, and that needing to put primer on first pretty much defeats the purpose of the product, though.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While EWG agrees that several of the essential oils used in the product have the tendency to be irritating, I am not suggesting that other people should not use the product if their skin is not bothered by it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I would use it myself if my skin could tolerate it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The other thing to know about this product is that the regular-sized jars are quite large and thus not appropriate for use on the go (which is when I think that many people would be most inclined to use this product).<\/span><\/p>\n

Miniature jars sometimes are included in Jones Road kits, and it would be nice if those were made available for individual purchase.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The description of this product reads, “Our most essential, versatile product is nourishing on lips and cheeks, soothing on skin and hair, and adored by all who discover them. These balms (made by hand in small batches in Portland, Oregon) are the closest competitor that I have been able to find to the Jones Road Miracle Balms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The product is available in a variety of pretty colors, including varying levels of brightness and shimmer. <\/span><\/p>\n

Only some of the shades are available via Credo.<\/span><\/p>\n

I tried the French Melon (“a beautiful light wash of\u00a0 pink orange melon pigment”) and think that it is a good shade for my skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

The product contains grapefruit oil and some processed botanical fragrance (limonene, linalool and citral), and has a citrus-y scent that I find to be pleasant.<\/span><\/p>\n

When I do a direct comparison with the Jones Road Miracle Balms, I don’t feel that this product gives me the same sort of dewy glow, though.<\/span><\/p>\n

It more looks like just a straight blush on my skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

It also is a stiffer formula that I have found more difficult to use.<\/span><\/p>\n

While this product is definitely less irritating to my skin than the Jones Road product, I still don’t feel that it feels that great on my skin.<\/span><\/p>\n

These little balms are currently available in six shades, all of them quite brightly colored.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These colors are rose pink, plum, cherry red, watermelon, kumquat, and passionfruit yellow.<\/span><\/p>\n

I’ve not found stickiness to be much of a problem with this formula, due to the specific formula used as well as the fact that they are so brightly colored that not much is needed to create a pretty effect.<\/span><\/p>\n

The company has a program where five color samples can be purchased for $15 (and then a $10 discount obtained on a future purchase), and so I have tried several of the shades, including Bee Sting (“pinched\u00a0 pink”), Bloodflower (“cherry glaze”) and Snapdragon (“juicy kumquat”).<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the fact that I don’t usually do that well in brighter makeup colors, I thought that all of these looked really pretty on me. <\/span><\/p>\n

I purchased and have enjoyed using Snapdragon, which is a red-orange shade that looks very pretty on both my cheeks and lips.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although I usually am hesitant to use brightly colored makeup, these products are so easygoing looking that I might purchase additional shades as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Note that a Rituel de Fille makeup artist will suggest appropriate shades if people send them a photo and information on what they are looking for (e.g. “Soft natural shades that will look good on me”). Based on my own experiences, I suggest trusting the makeup artists on this.<\/span><\/p>\n

Like most of Rituel de Fille’s products, this one has an unusually clean ingredients list. No artificial colors are used.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The product feels really clean to me and has not irritated my skin at all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, the product does have a strong scent from lavender oil, which may bother some people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It is more of a semi-liquid product and is packaged in a squeeze tube, which I personally like somewhat more having to open a jar.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I tried the Dusty Pink color and found that it worked well for me on my lips and on my cheeks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It has the dewy look of a balm but doesn’t seem as sticky to me as some products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I’ve not had any problems with this product irritating my skin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the skincare and makeup sections have a particular focus on products appropriate for women who are in their 40’s or beyond, the information provided may be useful for other people as well.<\/span><\/p>\n

The products are curated by Lisa Petrison,<\/strong><\/a> who has been focused on helping people to improve their health by avoiding toxicity since 2008 and who heads the Paradigm Change organization.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her\u00a0Living Clean in a Dirty World blog site<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0discusses a variety of topics of relevance to those who are working to pursue a more natural lifestyle with less exposure to harmful toxicity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lisa is the author of several books, including\u00a0A Beginner’s Guide to Mold Avoidance<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(co-written with Erik Johnson).<\/span><\/p>\n

She also runs the Paradigm Change website<\/strong><\/a> (focusing on issues related to toxic mold illness) and the Mold Avoiders Facebook group<\/strong><\/a> (designed for the discussion of all topics of interest to those pursuing the mold avoidance approach described in the “Beginner’s Guide” book).<\/span><\/p>\n

Lisa was born in August 1964 and has yet to try cosmetic surgery, Botox or other cosmetic treatments requiring interactions with a physician, or beauty products containing retinoids.<\/span><\/p>\n

In her former life, Lisa worked as a business school professor, as a marketing consultant to a variety of large companies, and as a reporter covering the advertising industry.<\/span><\/p>\n

She holds a Ph.D. in marketing and social psychology from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University as well as B.S.\/M.S. degrees from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern.<\/span><\/p>\n
