October 1, 2022<\/span><\/p>\n By Lisa Petrison<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Although I have long been focused on minimizing my facial skin’s exposure to sunlight, I have found that sunscreen in general tends to be substantially irritating to my delicate facial skin.<\/span><\/p>\n That is especially true of chemical sunscreens, but even physical sunscreens (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) are mildly annoying and cause the general quality of my skin to get worse if I try to wear them on a regular basis.<\/span><\/p>\n Fortunately, I have found that wearing the right kind of hat – one that has a wide brim and that is rated as SPF50 or higher – is much more effective than sunscreen at protecting my face and neck from the sun.<\/span><\/p>\n An additional benefit of sun hats is that – in combination with sunglasses – they protect the eyes from the sun, thus reducing the likelihood of cataracts and other damage.<\/span><\/p>\n I started wearing an SPF50+ hat as well as sunglasses anytime I was outdoors when I was camping full-time in the Southwest desert and have continued to be scrupulous about never going outside without those. <\/span><\/p>\n I also tend to avoid doing activities that will expose me to bright sunlight during the midday hours and to seek out shade whenever possible.<\/span><\/p>\n Although I do spend several hours per day outdoors, I have found that these strategies have provided my face with excellent protection from the sun.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n My facial skin never gets more than about half a shade darker during the summer months, and I feel that my face is showing little evidence of any sun damage despite the fact that I am now 58.<\/span><\/p>\n I’ve been interested to read recently that many experts in health toxicity issues – including EWG<\/strong><\/a> and Dr. Jill Carnahan<\/strong><\/a> – agree that protective hats\/sunglasses\/clothing and avoiding sun exposures entirely during peak hours are key, with safer sunscreens viewed more as a possibly helpful addition rather than as a total solution.<\/span><\/p>\n (Jill Carnahan’s suggestion that red raspberry oil, carrot seed oil and wheat germ oil can serve as effective sunscreens makes me want to look into trying those out.)<\/span><\/p>\n It is my observation that only about 1 in 1000 people wear what I would consider to be an adequate hat and that the large majority of people do not even wear what I would consider an inadequate hat (such as a baseball cap), even when outdoors in the bright summer sunlight for extended periods of time.<\/span><\/p>\n For them, sunscreen (even the relatively low level of sunscreen present in most foundations) may be at least a little helpful since it is the only sun protection that their faces are getting.<\/span><\/p>\n For this project, I tried out quite a few cleaner foundations and tinted moisturizers containing physical sunscreens (specifically, titanium dioxide or zinc oxide labeled as “non-nano”).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I have found that all of these products have irritated my face, but that putting on primer first decreases the irritation somewhat for me.<\/span><\/p>\n I would wear one of these (or an untinted facial sunscreen) in addition to my hat if I were going to be spending time in a boat or in the mountains skiing (since a hat would not protect against the strong rays of sunlight bouncing off the water or snow).<\/span><\/p>\n I also might consider wearing one of these products in addition to my hat if I were going to be spending a substantial amount of time in the sun during the midday hours on a particular day.<\/span><\/p>\n The products that I personally would choose do not include silicones since I feel that those interfere with the ability of my face to sweat properly. <\/span><\/p>\n People who prefer silicone-based foundation may find that different products than my own choices work out best for them.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n TOP PICKS<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n \u2663 Living Clean Superstars: \u2666 Additional Options: \u2660 Not Yet Tried: \u2665 Lisa’s Personal Choice: Notes:<\/span> <\/p>\n \u2665\u00a0Lisa’s Choice<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n \u2663\u00a0Living Clean Superstar<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n Overall Rating:<\/strong> Performance Rating:<\/strong> Ingredients Rating:<\/strong> Lisa Irritation Level:\u00a0<\/strong>None<\/span><\/p>\n The Sunday Afternoons website states, “Say goodbye to squinting and overheating\u2014our sun hats will keep your eyes protected and your head cool with breathable materials, UPF 50+ sun protection , and style. Protects with broad spectrum mineral-based SPF 30.”<\/span><\/p>\n This product is one of the few sunscreens that contains only titanium dioxide, without any zinc oxide or chemical sunscreens. <\/span><\/p>\n I was hoping that this would mean that my skin would not be bothered by it, but unfortunately the irritation level has been about at the same level that I have experienced with all the sunscreens with zinc oxide in them.<\/span><\/p>\n I do like the texture of the product and have found it to be somewhat hydrating (perhaps in part due to the squalane and the sodium hyaluronate), though.<\/span><\/p>\n It has a bit of a shine to it that makes me think that it is using mica, even though I do not see that mentioned on the ingredients list.<\/span><\/p>\n Although it does not include any silicone, it seems to do okay in terms of not making my wrinkles or texture issues look much worse.<\/span><\/p>\n In terms of the ingredients, the main one of concern seems to be polysorbate-60, which is on Credo’s “dirty” list since it apparently is produced using ethylene oxide, a carcinogen.<\/span><\/p>\n I’m also personally a little concerned about the inclusion of trehalose<\/strong><\/a> since that is now suspected as being associated with susceptibility to Clostridium difficile (a type of antibiotic-resistant bacteria).<\/span><\/p>\n The product is available in 20 shades.<\/span><\/p>\n I have the shade Vanilla 02 (“very fair neutral skin with a peach hue”).
