The use of the Reply function (which allows Facebook users to respond to specific comments on threads rather than to the thread as a whole) is not permitted in the Mold Avoiders Facebook group.
The reason for this is that when individuals use the Reply function, it results in those who need or want to read all the comments in the group being forced to read all the threads over and over again, in order to see what they may have missed.
This is an enormous time sink for those whose time is at a particular premium – for me and for the moderators that I am paying to monitor the comments.
On the other hand, if the Reply function is not used, then these individuals can just read the comments at the bottom of the threads to see what has been added.
This takes much, much less time than reading the many Mold Avoiders group threads (some of which can be hundreds of comments long) over and over and over again.
I do understand that some Facebook users like the Reply function. Looking at the situation solely as a Facebook user, I rather like it too.
I also understand that it can be challenging for members to remember not to use the Reply function in the Mold Avoiders group, since it is presented by Facebook as an option and since it is permitted elsewhere on Facebook.
Nonetheless, after much trial-and-error, I have concluded that the benefits of prohibiting the use of the Reply function in terms of time savings for those running the group outweigh any downsides for group members.
Thus, those wishing to participate in the Mold Avoiders Facebook group need to agree to do their best to remember not to use the Reply function in the group.
Instead of using the Reply function, please just write all new comments at the very bottom of the thread, under all the other comments that have been made.
If necessary, you may want to quote the relevant comment that you are responding to so that others will be able to put your own comments in context.
Insofar as Mold Avoiders members make a mistake and use the Reply function, anyone in the group as well as the moderators may remind everyone of the group rule.
This is to be done by writing the following comment either as a Reply or at the very bottom of the discussion on the thread:
Lisa has asked that the Reply function not be used in this group.
In order to avoid distractions from the substantive content, this is the ONLY mention of this rule that is to take place in the group.
For instance, please do not criticize or defend the group policy with regard to the Reply function; provide an apology or explanation with regard to why you used the Reply function; promise not to use the Reply function again; or offer any other such comments.
Just please continue on with the substantive discussion without using the Reply function again.
Thank you very much for your understanding and cooperation with regard to following this policy. This will result in a great deal of time and cost savings for me, therefore allowing me to continue to offer this group to the community.
